Mid-1990s New York City. Patti, Angela, Emma, and Nikki are high school seniors and best friends preparing for life after graduation. Their dreams for the future are very different—Angela wants to be a poet, Emma and Nikki are going to college, and Patti is a young mother seeking stability in her children’s lives—but all four are bright, passionate, and fiercely loyal to each other in a way that only teenagers can be. Their lives are turned upside down when, after being sexually abused, Nikki unexpectedly commits suicide. Grief-stricken, angry, and forced to return to their everyday lives without a satisfactory resolution to their feelings, the girls must come of age with a new understanding of the patriarchal world in which they live.
